Irish danceTwenty years after Riverdance (a seven-minute performance on the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest and subsequent global commercially successful dance show) catapulted Irish dance into the limelight, The World Irish Dancing Championships (Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne in Gaelic) was held in London for the first time in April 2014. The competition is often referred to as the ‘Olympics’ of Irish Dance reflecting the worldwide appeal of this dance form; popular with Irish communities scattered across the continents and in countries as far afield as Japan, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Eastern Europe.
